Hobby Horse tournament rules

Compete using hobby horses, each with a head at least 10”-12” in length and 7” high. The “body” should be at least 36” long. If the head is out of fabric and stuffed, then ideally, it should be 10”-12” high (to sit on the pole properly). Participants are allowed to bring their own horses. The rider can control the horse by holding the “reins” (holding the horse). The rider needs to be “riding” the horse. Horses normally stand on the ground, therefore, the hobby horse also needs to reach the ground. If the horse is too small, the rider needs to compensate by crouching down.

If the hobby horse is constructed and suspended from the rider by any means of a suspension system, thereby freeing the rider’s hands, then the horse is not controlled by the “reins”. The horse now can only take verbal commands. The rider has to call out the horse’s name, and the action the horse needs to take, else, the horse will continue till another command. The horse can only then do simple movements; stand, turn (90 degrees per “turn”), walk, walk left, walk right, run, run left, run right, stop, and backup. The horse’s name MUST precede each command for the command to have effect, to prevent all “free” horses from executing such command. An opponent’s voice shall have no effect.

Should a horse gain unbelievable intelligence by acting without commands, a HOLD will be called. The situation will be corrected, and the contest continued. Failure to control your hobby horse will result in a loss.

If agreed by all belligerent parties, an additional command, FOLLOW, may be used. The horse will follow the other horse(s) till a proper command is given. All horses controlled by bit and bridle do not have restrictions as long as the rider holds the “reins”. A horse controlled by bit and bridle, then hands-free will continue acting by the last motion and direction, unless a new command is properly given. The horse MUST be hands-free prior to a command given. All horses are to be inspected just like armor and weapons for safety.

Using hobby horses as weapons (not an ideal action) causes harm and pain to the hobby horse. The hobby horse must also pass weapons inspection for the type of weapon the horse will be used. If the rider is no longer “riding” the hobby horse, then the rider is immobile. The horse is dead at the instant of impact, and the rider is “on knees”. Striking a hobby horse is not advised due to safety reasons. Hobby horses can be made to look like armored, but must pass safety inspections.
